SqDC Proposal Writer 

Preamble:

Overview:

The Proposal writer performs a range of routine and non-routine tasks, including identifying funding streams, writing proposals, preparing reports, and developing and maintaining a grant tracking system.  

The proposal writer is responsible for developing winning proposals through strategic messaging, ensuring we’re articulating the best story and value to clients in compelling and differentiated ways, developing innovative deliverables to tell that story visually, and strong project management.

The location for this position is at the Seabird Island Band or as Assigned by the Director of Operations. 

Responsibilities:

  • Researching, writing, and organizing information professionally and credibly.
  • Conducting interviews.
  • Reviewing products, services, and/or business ideas.
  • Creating strategies for convincing others to take appropriate action.
  • Attending meetings and identifying opportunities for proposal writing.
  • Prioritizing responsibilities to meet deadlines.
  • Editing and revising proposals according to feedback.
  • Maintaining consistency in proposal writing by following company policies.
  • Working with the design team to create graphics and visuals for projects.
  • Giving presentations to the executive board.
  • Research and prepare funding proposals for various ventures and funding opportunities.
  • Seek funding opportunities for current or expected programs as directed or from the list provided.
  • Develop a good rapport with private/public funding sources.
  • Support and build on current or potential business partnerships for funding purposes.
  • Meet as required with the Chief Executive Officer and management team.
  • Prepare presentation materials for internal and external stakeholder meetings as required.
  • Participate in Meetings (as required). 
  • Complete a Monthly Progress Report.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the CEO.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or related field preferred and/or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience in proposal writing will be considered an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of word processing software.
  • Excellent computer and organizational skills, as well as attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Good strategic planning abilities.
  • Ability to work on-site or remotely as required.

SIB is an Indigenous government of the Sto:lo people located on Seabird Island in the Upper Fraser Valley region, 3 km east of Agassiz, British Columbia, Canada.  The on-reserve population is 650, with a total membership of 1051.  The SIB is located on Seabird Island, which is 2,179.80 hectares.

Board Director Responsibilities

 To fulfil the SqDC mandate to act on the vision, mission, and annual/long-term strategies and the economic goals of the Chief & Council, as well as to build a more robust and stronger Seabird Island economy, SqDC Board directors are expected to:

  • Know what exceptional governance is and practice it, as well as remain informed of new developments in the governance and regulatory environment.
  • Read and understand the financial statements of SqDC and assist the board in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Attend quarterly and other board meetings/activities as assigned and dedicate approximately 5-10 hours per month to fulfill these responsibilities.
  • Be responsible for reading board materials in advance of the meetings and must come prepared to ask questions and actively participate in discussions.
  • Serve on at least one subcommittee of the board.
  • Evaluate the overall performance of SqDC and will make recommendations for improvement or corrective measures as required. Board directors will engage in strategic planning for the organization and determine the overall mission, vision and values of the SqDC.

Skills & Experience

To ensure the Board of Directors has the full capabilities of providing the governance and leadership expertise necessary to oversee an organization, it is expected that there will be representation from skilled and experienced board directors to cover the following key business areas:

  • TMX Pipeline and Large-Scale Infrastructure Developments, Agricultural/Commercial Leasing, Natural Resource Development, Manufacturing, Marketing and Sales, Public Relations, Business Due Diligence, Risk Assessment, Human Resource Management, Information Technology, Finance and Accounting Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Business Development.

Therefore, preference will be given to applicants that have a minimum of five years of senior-level business experience in any of the following areas:  business procurement, sales, marketing, raising of capital, natural resource development, business development, accounting and/or financial experience.

Term of Appointment:

Board directors will be required to commit to a minimum two-year term, with the option of reappointment at the end of the term.

Job Description

Position:  Manager of Production & Sales

Job Posting – Full-Time/Permanent

Location:  Seabird Island Band

Overview: 

The SqDC is looking for an experienced, goal-oriented and result-driven professional to occupy the position of Manager of Production & Sales (MPS) to strengthen the manufacturing and sales of the businesses owned and operated by SqDC. The successful candidate will have at least five (5) years of sales/marketing experience in a management role.  This position reports directly to the Director of Operations.

Responsibilities:

The MPS’s primary responsibility is to manage the sales, marketing, and revenue performance of SqDC’s businesses.

Additional and specific responsibilities for this position are as follows:

  • Onsite production management of Nations Creations (small promotional products company).
  • Management support of SqDC Events (a small event planning company)
  • Manage and supervise NC and SqDC Events planning staff.
  • Managing the organizations’ resources to improve productivity and minimize downtime while at the same time increasing profits and reducing costs.
  • Involves meeting goals, creating workflow policies and procedures, creating schedules, and encouraging staff to put their best foot forward at all times so that the entire operation functions at peak efficiency.
  • Develop and implement sales plans and initiatives to drive customer acquisition, retention and satisfaction.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, identifying their needs, addressing concerns, and exploring new business opportunities.
  • Actively manage production at the NC production facility
  • Achieve growth and hit sales targets by successfully managing sales/marketing at Nations Creation and SqDC Events.
  • Develop and implement sales and marketing strategies for NC and SqDC Events – This also includes designing and implementing a strategic sales plan that will expand NC’s and SqDC’s Events customer base and ensure its strong presence.
  • Set sales objectives, provide coaching, and monitor sales representatives/staff
  • Prepare sales, revenue, and expense reports and present realistic forecasts to the management team.
  • Identify staff training needs and provide training for all SqDC retail and manufacturing staff as required.
  • Track and report sales and revenue data for Nations Creations and SqDC Events.
  • Supervise all internal and external marketing and sales campaigns.
  • Secure funding (application/proposal driven) and identify economic opportunities for SqDC;
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate shall have:

  • A degree in business/marketing, related field, or equivalent qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge in garment production and sales/marketing.
  • Successful management of manufacturing operations
  • Experience in training, coaching and supervising production staff in sales, marketing and related areas.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership abilities
  • Proven track record in talent development and mentoring others
  • Outstanding communication and people skills
  • Working knowledge of data analysis and performance/operation metrics
  • Extensive knowledge of MS Office and various business software (POS, e-business, etc.)
  • Preference is given to First Nations applicants; however other qualified candidates will be equally considered based on senior leadership experience and/or experience working with First Nations in economic or business development.

Compensation

Base Salary, milestone bonuses, employee benefits, health and dental, pension benefits – Wage will be identified and dependent on experience and qualifications—annual performance bonus of up to 25% of base salary.

Salary Range:  $ 70,000.00 to $ 85,000.00 (plus Milestone Bonus)

SQDC Business Intern

Background:

The Sqewqel Development Corporation (SQDC) Summer Intern program is a unique opportunity for a person (over the age of 19) who is enrolled full-time in a recognized university business degree program to have the opportunity to learn new and practical business skills and to become more aware of working within a First Nation business setting.

Furthermore, in this role the SQDC Business Intern will work with the SQDC team by providing project support and coordination, marketing, conducting business intelligence research and other duties as assigned.

You’ll learn the electrical and mechanical fundamentals as it pertains to the day-to-day operations of the provincial electrical grid, develop competency to operate the Interchange desk (which administers BC Hydro’s Open Access Transmission Tariff with its Transmission Customers) and work with BC Hydro’s distribution system and generating stations.

Before moving on to more complex technical skills and challenging assignments, you’ll learn the operating and safety procedure and how to isolate high voltage electrical equipment for maintenance.
